Solar Eclipse

On Friday 20th March there was a solar eclipse visible in the sky over Ireland. It happened in the morning, so we were able to go outside and see it. You cannot look directly at the sun or at an eclipse, so we made pinholes in pieces of card, and we had a sheet of paper. You stand with your back to the sun, and hold up the pinhole card and the sheet behind it. The idea is that the sun shines through the pinhole, and projects the image of the eclipse onto the sheet of paper behind, so that you can see the image safely. Unfortunately, it was very cloudy at the time, so it did not work. However, it did get very dark, as if it was about to pour rain, and it became much colder. When we turned out the lights in our prefab, we were amazed at how dark it was.

We are really enjoying our soccer coaching with Stephen. Last Thursday the weather was lovely, and we were able to have our training session outside. Here are the photos:

Energy Action Day

On Wednesday March 18th we held our Energy Action Day. This was part of our work towards our Green Flag for Energy. Everybody wore something green, or their school jumper. There was an Energy Assembly after morning prayer, where the Green Schools committee told us some energy saving tips, and read out Environmental poems. Junior and senior infants had story time, where two pupils from the Green Schools committee visited their classrooms and read them an Energy Story. The Green Schools committee called into every class to remind them to turn off lights at break time, and to turn off the whiteboard and computer if they weren't being used. We closed the computer room all day. Before lunch time, the whole school went to the hall, and we had our photo taken. It was a great day.

Book Review Competition

As part of World Book Week, we held a Book Review Competition in our class. We wrote a book review, and the best entries would win a prize. Congratulations to Ruby, Geraldine, Erika, Gabriella K, Gabriella S, Séana, Chloe Caudilla, Natalee and Chinazam for their excellent entries, Ms Doyle found it so hard to judge the competition that she had to give the entries to an independent adjudicator! Very well done to Chloe Caudilla and Séana who came 1st, and Natalee who came 2nd.

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day on Thursday March 5th. We went to the Library for storytelling. We listened to some exciting stories about Fionn MacCumhaill. On the way back to school, we visited Crannóg bookshop, where we bought a World Book Day book with our book tokens. It was a great day!

Here are our books!

Claude Monet: Vase of Tulips

We have been continuing our work on Monet. We looked through more of his beautiful flower paintings, and chose Vase of Tulips as one of our favourites. Here are our interpretations of this painting.

Knitting

We have started knitting lessons with Orla. She brought us all in a bag containing wool, needles and instructions. We will be knitting every Friday. It was quite hard, but with practice and patience, it will get easier. Check back here for updates, and who knows what we will have produced in six weeks time!
